Economy minister off to Nairobi to attend UNCTAD (18 July 2016)

Minister of Economy and Finance Ali Tayebnia left Tehran for Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday to take part in the 14th meeting of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

IRNA economic correspondent said that the conference is of high importance in light of the preparatory arrangements made by the Islamic Republic of Iran for joint venture investments in the industry sector.

Tayebnia is expected to address the conference and hold separate meetings with the UNCTAD officials and several of his counterparts to regulate Iranian trade relations with the outside world.

UNCTAD was established by the United Nations in 1964 to integrate economies of the developing states with that of international community.

UNCTAD played a steering function in taking shape of the World Trade Organization and the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs.

Iran has applied for membership in WTO to secure the rights of 80 million population to free trade and export of Iranian goods to the world markets.

The US blocked Iranian membership because Iran is not friendly with the United States Administration. It accounts for balatant violation of human rights of 80 million Iranian population.

The UNCTAD conference is held every four years.
