Iran, South Korea Planning to Widen All-Out Ties (21 October 2018)

Iranian Ambassador to South Korea Saeed Badamchi Shabestari announced that Tehran and Seoul have prepared a comprehensive plan to broaden mutual cooperation in different fields.

"The plan aims to expand bilateral relations between Iran and South Korea to overcome the US sanctions re-imposed against Tehran," Badamchi Shabestari said on Saturday.

He reiterated that the plan would address the expansion of mutual cooperation in political, economic, commercial, cultural, and parliamentary areas.

"The plan will be implemented in line with a timetable and would take priorities into consideration,” Badamchi Shabestari added.

The Iranian ambassador underlined that the Iranian and Korean economies complement one another, and said, "The volume of bilateral trade surpassed the $12-billion benchmark last year."

In relevant remarks on Wednesday, South Korean Ambassador to Tehran Ryu Jeong-hyun said that his country"s companies will continue activities in Iran irrespective of the US sanctions.

Ryu made the remarks in a meeting with Head of the Iran Chamber of Cooperatives Bahman Abdollahi in Tehran.

“Many European companies are leaving Iran, but (South) Korean firms have declared they will stay in Iran,” he said, adding that Korean companies understand how important it is to be present in the Iranian market.

“Our ties are currently influenced by the US sanctions…, but the fact that cooperatives are exempted from these bans gives South Korea a very good opportunity,” Ryu said.

He also hailed the strategic and significant position of Iran in the region, and underlined that relations between Tehran and Seoul are far beyond bilateral trade.
